In this stirring poem, young Rwandan poet Natasha D. Muhoza explores the ability of young Africans to reclaim the history, heritage and culture lost by various societies during the colonization period. Muhoza employs images of yesteryear and interposes them with the trying issues that face the African continent today. She states most poignantly, "African to them was just a dark continent, but Africa to me was home."
Africa is home.
The home of nearly two billion souls. The home of future doctors, lawyers; as well as soon to be renowned national and international leaders. The home of children that hope and dream of a changed tomorrow. A day where anything is possible.
Africa is home.
Muhoza employs us to throw aside stigmatized our understandings of the African continent, and imagine a world where the African child can flourish. We he can aspire to achieve his dreams. Where she can believe that her value is equal to that of any of her international peers. Simply where they can be children and dance!
